Creating Harmony Between Your Adoptive and Bio Kids

Emylie and Daniel Cox decided they would become foster parents, because they understood the need that existed in our community among children who didn’t have loving homes. “Violence towards children was high when we started fostering,” says Emylie. Kentucky is ranked third in the country for incidences of child abuse and neglect. “We went into this with the intent of fostering but were open to adoption. Our stance was that we wanted to love them like they were our own kids, whether that was a year or forever.”

In February 2018, the couple began fostering two brothers, but their family expanded when Emylie gave birth to twin boys. Then nearly 2.5 years later, they adopted their foster sons.

The bond between all four of them, Emylie says, is strong. “Our oldest son was very excited and always wanted to help out [with the twins]. He can get super mad at me, but he will baby them. They play and interact just like any other siblings, and they all have big imaginations.”

Fully integrating the boys into the process of preparing for their baby brothers made the transition for them easier. “We read a lot of books about welcoming new siblings. We also let them pick out many of the things for the twins. We repeatedly assured them that they were going to be great big brothers, and that we had enough love for everyone,” she says.

Adjusting to a new family and environment is challenging for foster kids and adoptees, but Emylie says the Behavioral Health Outpatient Services at St. Joe’s has also been a lifesaver for them. “The therapy has helped us to understand as parents where their needs are coming from and how to help. It helped our oldest son with coping skills and gave him a safe place to talk about his concerns.”
