Celebrating the Joys of Motherhood: Becky Wielage

This month, we will feature nine adoptive moms who prove that love transcends a biological connection. Read their stories and become inspired to make a difference in the lives of foster kids.

Becky Wielage, mother to Jill and Samantha

What is your fondest memory of being a mom?

Becoming a mom was a dream of mine – something I envisioned for myself for as long as I can remember. Before accepting Jill as our first placement, I was beginning to give up on that dream becoming a reality. Being a mom of two babies within six months was overwhelming at times but being their mom is the most important job I have. They’re only little once. I don’t have regrets about letting the laundry or sink full of dishes wait. Holding the girls, reading and playing with them, and making memories with them is my favorite thing to do. The way they snuggle into my arms or smile when I walk into a room makes all the hard stuff worth it.

How has this experience changed you?

I’ve found my voice. I’ve learned that I know them better than anyone. They may not be my blood, but in our situation, they are my children. If I don’t advocate for them, no one will. I’ve learned how strong I am. I’ve overcome things that I never dreamed I would have to.

What would you like for new foster/adopt moms to know? Is there any advice you would like to give?

Fostering to adopt doesn’t mean you won’t love them like your own. We don’t have to be blood to have the love we share. I would do anything for my girls. When we first started this journey, I was terrified of the what ifs. I still am. This has been far harder than I ever dreamed, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Take the chance, you’d be surprised!

Thanks for sharing your story Becky!

P.S. Making a difference in the lives of our SJ families and kids is simple: donate, become a respite provider, or a foster parent.
