Celebrating the Joys of Motherhood: Alice Calhoun

This month, we will feature nine adoptive moms who prove that love transcends a biological connection. Read their stories and become inspired to make a difference in the lives of foster kids.

Alice Calhoun, mother to Ben and Ana

What is your fondest memory of being a mom to your two kids? There are so many good memories.  The day they moved in. The first time they called me mom. The first Christmas is one of my favorites. The first time you have Santa Claus come and get to see how excited they are in the morning is priceless.

How has this experience changed you? It has made me a better person. My priorities have changed for the better.

What has motherhood taught you about yourself? You don’t have to be perfect to be a good mom.

What would you like for new foster/adopt moms to know? Becoming a foster parent is incredible and terrifying. The kids are scared too.

Is there any advice you would like to give? Take time for yourself. Have dates with your spouse. It’s ok to tag out and take a break. Use your support system. Ask for help. For anyone considering becoming a foster parent but thinks that the time is not right – there is never a good time. Take the chance.

Thanks for sharing your story Alice!

P.S. Making a difference in the lives of our SJ families and kids is simple: donate, become a respite provider, or a foster parent.
